Govt allocates over UAH 1.6 bln to improve Chornobyl NPP confinement safety
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine allocated over UAH 1.6 billion in budget funds to carry out work to secure the New Safe Confinement of the Shelter facility built over Chornobyl NPP's unit No. 4, the Ministry of Energy said Thursday.
"The funds will be directed, among other things, to overcoming the consequences of Russia's terrorist attack on the station's shelter," the statement said.
The Ministry of Energy noted that despite difficult wartime conditions, Ukraine will continue work to maintain three Chornobyl NPP units, the spent nuclear fuel storage facility and radioactive waste storage facilities in a safe condition.
"However, eliminating global risks is only possible if Russia stops attacks on Ukrainian nuclear facilities. A clear response from the world to such terrorist acts is needed, including restricting the aggressor state's rights in the IAEA structure," the ministry said.
As reported, State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine Chairman Oleh Korikov at the end of January this year provided information on the implementation of temporary urgent measures aimed at reducing negative consequences for the New Safe Confinement of the Shelter facility, which was damaged as a result of a Russian drone attack on February 14, 2025. In particular, he discussed Chornobyl NPP's implementation of a technical solution — temporary closure of the opening in the Arch's outer shell at the drone impact site to reduce negative effects from precipitation.
