Russia's attack on Aug 26 intended to disrupt operation of Ukrainian NPPs – note to IAEA

The massive Russian missile and drone attack on the critical infrastructure of the Ukrainian energy system on August 26 was intended to disrupt the operation of the country's nuclear power plants (NPPs), according to an official note from Ukraine to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to the document, as a result of the Russian attack on the morning of August 26, units No. 1, 3, 4 of the Rivne NPP were de-energized and disconnected from the grid, and the capacity of the Pivdennoukrainsk NPP was also reduced. In the evening of the same day, due to fluctuations in the energy system caused by the Russian attack, unit No. 3 of the Pivdennoukrainsk NPP was disconnected from the grid.

"The Russian Federation continues to deliberately target Ukraine's energy infrastructure, intending to disrupt the operation of the country's nuclear power plants, which provide most of Ukraine's electricity. Russian attacks pose a significant risk to the stable operation of nuclear facilities in Ukraine and the safety of millions of people," the document emphasizes.

As reported, the Russian Federation launched 127 missiles and 109 attack unmanned aerial vehicles at Ukrainian territory on August 26, of which 102 missiles and 99 UAVs were shot down.

NPC Ukrenergo recognized the Russian attack on energy facilities on August 26 as the largest since the beginning of the war.
