Over 5,000 women, girls killed, 14,000 injured in Ukraine in 4 years – UN
Four years of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine have claimed the lives of over 5,000 Ukrainian women and girls, and another 14,000 have been injured, with 2025 becoming the deadliest year and the real number of victims likely much higher, according to the report "The Impact of Foreign Assistance Cuts on Women's Rights and Women-Led Organizations in Ukraine" published on the website of the global organization UN Women on Friday.
The report is about the reduction in funding for women-led organizations and organizations that protect women's rights during war, "dismantling front-line protection systems and forcing life-saving services for women and girls to scale back or shut down." It is reported that one in three such organizations can last no more than six months at current funding levels. In 2026, organizations will be forced to stop providing life-saving services to at least 63,000 Ukrainian women in need, with those most at risk hardest hit: residents of frontline settlements and remote villages, older women, and women and girls with disabilities.
"While UN Women continues to work with and invest in women's organizations in Ukraine, more sustained funding is needed so that they can keep delivering essential services," UN Women Executive Director Sima Bahous said.
