Costa: Future being written in Kyiv, not in Moscow
President of the European Council António Costa said Europe's future is linked to Ukraine's freedom.
At a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv, he said the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine was not only about remembering the past but about shaping the future, adding that the future was being written in Kyiv, not in Moscow. Costa said the only path to a just and lasting peace was one based on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and respect for the UN Charter.
Costa welcomed all efforts aimed at achieving peace, including efforts by partners in the United States.
He added that Russia could not achieve victory at the negotiating table while it was losing heavily on the battlefield, and said Russia must come to the negotiating table seriously and accept that it cannot win this war.
He noted, however, that Russia was intensifying its attacks on civilian infrastructure amid harsh winter conditions.
Costa said his message remains as clear as possible, Ukraine can count on the European Union. Ukraine's future is in the European Union, he added.
