Shmyhal denies threat to Slovakia from sanctions on Lukoil's oil transit, expects constructive dialogue

Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has said there is no threat to Slovakia due to sanctions on the transit of Russian Lukoil's oil and expressed hope for a constructive dialogue on the issue.

"In the past few weeks, I had several talks with Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico. All of them were in the spirit of our common new pragmatism policy and all of them were dedicated to energy security of our countries," he said on the Telegram channel on Wednesday.

According to the prime minister, Ukraine insisted and continues to insist on the necessity to refuse from Russian oil as much as possible.

"All countries understand this and most of them are taking action. The EU allowed Slovakia and a range of countries to use Russian oil under condition that these countries actively develop alternative supply channels. Most of them are developing them," he said.

The head of the Ukrainian government also noted that Ukraine is still a reliable transit country for the states that value freedom and the rule of law.

Shmyhal underlined that the sanctions imposed by the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) do not pose any threat to the energy security of Slovakia and Europe, which is why their lifting is not a matter of discussion.

"Slovakia is our reliable partner, from whom we do not expect any blackmail or threats. Because threatening Ukraine, which is defending itself against the aggressor, in favor of the terrorist state to continue earning its bloody super profits is a dubious way," he said.

The prime minister also said the parties agreed on another intergovernmental meeting in October to continue "constructive, pragmatic dialog."

"I am grateful to my colleague, Mr. Fico, for important constructive talks. I am confident that we will find mutually beneficial solutions for Ukraine, Slovakia and Europe," he said.
