Ukrainian regions must approve energy independence plans by year-end – Ukrenergo head

By the end of the year, each region in Ukraine must approve and present its own energy independence plans, detailing the generation capacity required for stable energy supplies, according to Acting Chairman of Ukrenergo Oleksiy Brekht.

"Currently, every region is working on these energy independence passports. The purpose of this document is to ensure that each region understands one key point: the population and critical infrastructure must have access to locally sourced power," Brekht said in an Ukrenergo Facebook post following the Kyiv International Economic Forum.

According to him, Ukrenergo has proposed an "ideal energy mix" to guide each region's energy strategy, based on their specific needs and capabilities. This mix, developed with input from Ukrenergo, offers information on optimal energy sources and generation capacity.

"Fifty percent of this ideal mix should come from renewable energy, around 20-25% from peak load guaranteed power, and about 10-15% from energy storage facilities," Brekht said.

He added that these plans are scheduled to be finalized by early December and will be presented to both domestic and international investors.

"This will be a critical step toward regional and national energy independence, setting the course for implementation this year and next," Brekht said.
