Shmyhal: Second winter of full-scale invasion passes without blackouts, power outage schedules

The second winter of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine passed without blackouts and power outages according to scheduled, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal has said.

"The second winter of the full-scale invasion is over. We passed through its without blackouts and power outages according to schedules for the entire country. Today, on the first day of spring, it is necessary to say important words that the energy system's operation is stable. No restrictions were applied to the users. One year and even one year and a half ago many of us did not believe this would be possible," he said at a government meeting on Friday.

The preparations for the winter played the key role, the prime minister said, adding that, in particular, power units were protected, a stock of reserve equipment was created, and 90% of backbone networks were repaired.

In addition, Ukraine has developed a strong energy coalition supporting the country over the past one year and a half.

"Our international partners passed hundreds of units of critical equipment. The Energy Support Fund raised more than EUR 400 million. All this was done to ensure that Ukrainian families are provided with electricity supply, Ukrainian entrepreneurs have power supply, and our economy works today," Shmyhal said.

He also said that Ukraine currently has more than 8.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas in its underground storage facilities and more than 1 million tonnes of coal in stock.

"We are about to confidently complete this heating season, and we will immediately start preparations for the next winter," the prime minister said.
