Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, 93 employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine have been killed in the line of duty, more than 50 humanitarian workers have been killed or injured, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said.

"Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, 93 employees of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine have been killed in the line of duty, and almost 400 more rescuers have been injured. Since February 2022, more than 150 incidents have occurred in Ukraine as a result of Russian attacks that directly affected humanitarian aid, and more than 50 humanitarian workers have been killed or injured. During the same period, more than 60 airstrikes were carried out on humanitarian depots," a statement published on the Foreign Ministry's website on Monday says.

The Foreign Ministry notes that the tragic figures are constantly increasing.

During a panel discussion on the occasion of World Humanitarian Day, head of the Coordinating Humanitarian Center, Yevhen Koliada, thanked foreign partners for their help in providing the equipment necessary for the work of volunteers. Thus, according to him, more than 2,500 humanitarian workers received insurance policies due to accidents and war risks.

In turn, coordinator of the UN system in Ukraine, humanitarian coordinator Matthias Schmale also noted that psychological assistance to humanitarian workers is equally important.

"We also need to monitor their mental well-being. We focus more on physical protection and pay less attention to their mental well-being," he said.

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories, Iryna Vereschuk, said that in order to successfully protect humanitarian workers and civilians, a mechanism for accountability for violations of international humanitarian law should be developed.

"Everyone should know the rules and adhere to them even during such terrible wars as we have now. And when we develop a mechanism of responsibility in the world for violating such rules, then each side of the conflict will refrain from attacks on humanitarian organizations, will refrain from destroying humanitarian warehouses that help the civilian population, will open humanitarian corridors and then the civilian population will not suffer as Ukrainians suffer today," she stressed.

In memory of the attack on the UN office in Baghdad in 2003, which claimed the lives of 22 humanitarian workers, the world celebrates World Humanitarian Day on August 19.
