Dialogue with Russia needed to end war, but it must be based on Ukrainian strength – Stoltenberg

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that negotiations with the Russian side will be needed to end Russia's war against Ukraine, DW reports, citing an interview with the Secretary General published by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Saturday, September 14.

He said that in order to end this war, dialogue with Russia must be resumed at some point, but it should be based on the Ukrainian force. According to him, we must be strong with the allies to have a meaningful dialogue. He believes that there is much less space for this now, almost none, compared to 2014 [when the annexation of Crimea and the invasion of the Russian Federation into Eastern Ukraine took place].

Stoltenberg also expressed regret that NATO allies and NATO itself did not do more to strengthen Ukraine earlier to prevent a full-scale war.

If Ukraine were militarily stronger, he added, the threshold for a Russian attack would be higher.

The Secretary General also summed up by saying that now they are arming Ukraine, which is at war, then they could arm Ukraine to prevent war.
