MFA: Suspect in assassination attempt on Trump not connected to Ukrainian govt institutions or AFU
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on the world community to refrain from artificially linking the suspect in the assassination attempt on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, Ryan Wesley Routh, despite his support for Ukraine in the war against Russia, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhy said at a briefing on Tuesday, Suspilne reports.
"Yes, we see from the news that the suspect previously publicly supported Ukraine. But, there are hundreds of millions of people in the United States who support Ukraine. And it is obvious that this is a diverse group of people. We call on everyone to refrain from artificially linking the suspect's actions to Ukraine," he said. In addition, Tykhy said Ukraine strongly condemns this "criminal act and all forms of political violence."
"We are glad that the suspect was detained so quickly, and we want to emphasize that he has no ties to Ukrainian government agencies and has never fought for Ukraine as part of the International Legion or other units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.
On Sunday, a shooting occurred near the golf club where Trump was in Florida.
According to three senior law enforcement officials, the suspect in the assassination attempt on Trump has been detained and identified as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh. He was armed with an assault rifle and was near the golf club when the former president played golf on Sunday afternoon. A number of media outlets have linked Routh to Ukraine.
The Main Intelligence Agency of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry has denied speculation that American Ryan Routh served in the Foreign Legion in Ukraine.
