Ukraine resumes talks on joint control at border checkpoints with EU – trade rep
Ukraine and the European Commission have resumed work on agreements for joint control at border crossing points (BCP), announced Deputy Minister of Economy and Ukraine's Trade Representative Taras Kachka following the 14th meeting of the joint Coordination Platform for Ukrainian agricultural export and transit in Brussels.
"The European Commission provided its comments on the relevant agreement with the Polish government. Although this step is bureaucratic, it is an important sign that, unlike previous attempts to conclude such an agreement, this time we see the EU and Poland's determination to finalize it. Also, the agreement between Romania and Moldova is in its final stages. This means that similar agreements with all neighboring EU member states will be concluded shortly," Kachka was quoted by the Ministry of Economy's press service.
The ministry clarified that representatives from Ukraine, the European Commission, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria discussed the security of Ukrainian seaports and maritime routes.
"The ports of Greater Odesa play a key role in normalizing trade flows and increasing Ukrainian exports. Their stable operation directly depends on how reliably the ports are protected from attacks by the aggressor state," said the deputy minister.
He also noted that an important addition to sea port exports is the export through the Danube River.
"Today, this route is highly efficient, given the cost. Moreover, the increase in trade through the Danube and the resumption of sea exports have allowed for more active use of land routes for exporting goods with high added value," Kachka said.
Participants of the Coordination Platform discussed production and consumption forecasts for agricultural products and other issues related to food security.
"The work carried out by Ukraine and its partners creates opportunities to resolve remaining trade issues in the region and helps define trade parameters for the period after June 2025," summarized Ukraine's trade representative.
