USAID to provide additional funds to support victims of war in Ukraine

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will provide an additional $237 million to meet the humanitarian needs of the most vulnerable populations affected by the conflict in Ukraine, as well as Ukrainian refugees in the region, USAID Administrator Samantha Power said during a visit to Ukraine on Wednesday, October 2.

"This support will facilitate the work of partners providing life–saving assistance on the ground - in particular, critical assistance in preparing for the upcoming winter season with its harsh conditions, as well as food, shelter, protection and medical care," the USAID press service reports.

The bulk of the announced assistance, including funds under the request for additional national security funding, which received bipartisan support in the U.S. Congress, will be aimed at meeting the urgent needs of Ukrainians inside the country. This support will facilitate the activities of those partners who provide assistance using the capabilities of local markets – that is, one that allows people in need of support to buy essential goods such as food in these markets.

Additional funding will also allow Ukrainians to access critical protection assistance – in particular, psychosocial support for victims of gender-based violence.

At the same time, additional resources will allow partners, representing UN organizations and public associations, to provide urgently needed health care – in particular, to ensure the work of emergency medical teams and disease prevention measures, repair of heating, water supply and sewerage systems and access to personal hygiene products.
