Meloni: It’s important to involve more players to convince Moscow to negotiate

It is important to attract more international partners to convince Moscow to sit down at the negotiating table, says Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

"With President Zelenskyy, we also agreed on the importance of bringing in as many international players as possible who can persuade Moscow to come to the negotiating table and negotiate in a credible manner," Meloni said after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Rome on Friday night.

She also noted that the prospects for Euro-Atlantic integration remain a fundamental part of the discussion and Italy is ready to continue it with Ukraine and other partners.

Meloni also noted that the goal of Italy's support is to create the best conditions for peace negotiations for Ukraine.

"The peace I have spoken about several times cannot mean capitulation, as too many have cowardly suggested. And that means, of course, military support, as well as support in the energy sector, which is one of the priorities," she said.

In addition, the Italian Prime Minister added that "we are also thinking together about how to support the Ukrainian defense industry, how to strengthen the European defense industry, to make these efforts more and more sustainable, more and more future-oriented."

"So we listened very carefully to his [Zelenskyy’s] most pressing needs and demands that he told us about. And at the same time, we must continue to respond and take a firm position in terms of responding to any direct or indirect support for the Russian military effort," Meloni concluded.
