China-Brazil plan based on UN Charter worthy of consideration to open door for peace in Ukraine – Swiss FM
The plan of China and Brazil on the peaceful settlements of Russia's war against Ukraine was supplemented with a reference to the UN Charter in September 2024 and it is worthy of consideration as it expands the alliance of the countries willing to put an end to the war, Swiss Minister of Foreign Affairs Ignazio Cassis has said Thursday.
"Any plan aimed at achieving peace, capable of making a constructive contribution, if it is based on the UN Charter, should be welcomed and considered when interesting complementary elements are present," he told a press conference in Lausanne during the second annual Ukraine Mine Action Conference (UMAC-2024).
Сassis said that there are still contradictions in this plan, but if read in a political way, it opens the door to dialog.
"And in that sense, we can only welcome the initiative to open the door. I don't think the rapprochement has advanced enough yet, but I believe that an open door is always better than a closed one," he said.
When asked about the possible date of the second Peace Summit after the first one held in Bürgeshtok in June this year, Cassis noted that at the end of October a series of conferences on the Peace Formula presented by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would be finalized. According to the minister, this concludes the so-called Copenhagen process, within the framework of which the first Peace Summit was held.
According to the minister, the novelty was the Victory Plan publicly presented by President Zelensky in the Verkhovna Rada on October 16, which was further explained in Lausanne by Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.
"We are going to continue to study this issue [...] to see how Switzerland can help strengthen this path that will lead us to a just and lasting peace," Cassis said.
As reported, on September 28, the media reported that the Swiss Foreign Ministry expressed support for the peace plan of China and Brazil to end the war in Ukraine. In response, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Peace Formula is "the only way to a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace."
