Ukraine may become EU member by late 2029 – Várhelyi
Ukraine may become a member of the European Union (EU) within the next five years, provided that all necessary reforms are carried out, European Commissioner for Enlargement Olivér Várhelyi said at a press conference in Brussels on Wednesday.
As reported by Deutsche Welle, Várhelyi said that additional instruments have been created for Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkan countries to help them speed up their reforms.
These instruments are called Growth Plan, Ukraine Plan, depending on the country. With this plan, the EU has made it possible for the Western Balkans, Moldova, and also for Ukraine to complete the reforms to get everything ready and become a member of the EU before the end of the next European Commission mandate, he said.
On September 30, a report on EU enlargement was presented in Brussels, which outlines the progress of candidate countries for accession.
The European Council at the summit in Brussels on June 23, 2022 granted Ukraine the status of an EU candidate. Kyiv must carry out several important reforms, in particular related to the rule of law, oligarchs and corruption.
