Markarova at KJF-2024: Only cooperation between countries can preserve democracy

Countries must unite against terrorist regimes to preserve democracy, Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Oksana Markarova said during her speech at the fifth Kyiv Jewish Forum in Washington.

"Either we all come together and actually stop terrorists everywhere, or they help each other and improve themselves to kill peaceful people," the ambassador said, noting that the "axis of evil" consisting of Russia, Iran and North Korea must be decisively stopped in Ukraine.

Markarova also said that in 2021, Ukraine took a course on clearly countering anti-Semitism, actually including this counteraction in legislation. She said today Ukraine has one of the lowest rates of anti-Semitism.

"When the terrible attack on Israel happened, it brought us closer together and we continued the cooperation that had already been established. And we hear from all Jewish organizations how important this is for the world and the United States in particular," the diplomat said.

She said it is crucial for Ukraine to decisively put an end to anti-Semitic manifestations: "We continue to teach about the Holocaust in schools, we honor all the events, especially those that took place on the territory of our country from Babyn Yar to others. A country that believes in democracy, human dignity and values should no longer allow these phenomena," the ambassador said.

The forum was organized by the Jewish Confederation of Ukraine and The Jerusalem Post.
