French Ambassador: There should be no red lines for our assistance to Ukraine
France strongly supports Ukraine and believes that there should be no red lines, including on the issue of long-range capabilities or NATO membership, Ambassador of France to Ukraine Gaël Veyssière has said on Tuesday.
"Having clearly stated, including in February last year, that there should be no red lines on our side. Including in long-range capabilities, including for NATO, and this is something that we had no problem with. I think that sometimes it is important to take a certain risk for public opinion, but in order to be able to speak about the need to do more in support for Ukraine," he said during the presentation of the results of the survey entitled "Foreign policy and security. Sentiments of the Ukrainian society."
According to the diplomat, international partners have high expectations, and rightly so.
Speaking about discussions on security guarantees for Kyiv, Veyssière said France and Ukraine's other partners have a responsibility "which is to think about it and prepare."
"So that when the time comes, if Ukraine asks us, we will be in a position to support them as much as we can and fully participate in a process that will lead to a just, long-lasting and sustainable peace. But the important thing is that it has to be initiated by Ukraine. Ukraine is the victim. It is up to Ukraine to decide when it can speak and on what basis, and we are here to support it," he said.
According to the ambassador, this also means technical planning of what "we can do and what we cannot do militarily" and also means "planning politically."
He emphasized that France is doing its best to strongly support Ukraine, recalling diplomatic efforts, particularly in Paris and at Notre Dame last Saturday.
"It was very important that Ukrainians had the opportunity to speak directly with President-elect [Donald] Trump," the diplomat added.
Veyssière also pointed out that France is providing strong humanitarian, civilian, military support, although it does not speak aloud much about it.
"Because we do not believe in adding numbers to numbers, we believe in the fulfillment of our commitments," he said.
The ambassador recalled that France was the first country to supply Ukraine with light tanks, after which many other countries started supplying tanks as well.
