Yermak: There's understanding that Trump wants to stop war in Ukraine

After the meeting of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in Paris on December 7, there is an understanding that Trump definitely wants to end the war of Russia against Ukraine, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Andriy Yermak said in an interview with the Karpyak on Suspilne project.

The head of the presidential administration also said that Trump wants to end the war with a just peace. According to Yermak, it is impossible for the United States today to support a dictatorship. He explained that the conversation between Zelenskyy, Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris was a response to the lie of Russian propaganda that " Ukraine does not want peace."

Yermak also said it was important that the plans and steps the new U.S. administration decides to take are shared with the Ukrainian side.

"For them to hear us, for them to really – and this is not easy – very quickly be able to get all the information for three years, be able to get first-hand information about what is happening today at the front, all the risks of all these talks about some ceasefire, just ceasefire, without any guarantees. We clearly understood our position on guarantees, because it is very important for us to end this war with a just peace, to have very strong legal and working guarantees, because in our experience, unfortunately, all the guarantees we had up to this point did not really provide us with security, because this war happened," Yermak said.

He noted the importance of the fact that preparatory consultations with Trump's team take place even before the inauguration, because it will give the parties the opportunity to start working with specific topics immediately after January 20. The head of the Office of the President explained that the main topic is ending the war, on the terms of a just peace.

"I believe on the terms of Ukraine. Because all that Ukraine needs is the resumption of international law, is the restoration of our territorial integrity. And that's what we mean when we talk about a just peace," Yermak said.

Earlier, Reuters reported, citing two informed sources, that the Ukrainian head of state used his first meeting with Trump since the U.S. election to explain the need for security guarantees for Ukraine in any negotiated end to the war with Russia.
