Insufficient funding for Ukrainian archives sector hinders modernization, development – Dpty Minister of Justice

Government funding for Ukraine's archival sector is only sufficient to cover its most urgent needs, leaving no room for modernization, development, or the construction of new storage facilities, according to Deputy Minister of Justice Viktoria Vasylchuk.
"Basic urgent needs are covered by the government's allocated funding. However, for modernization, improvements, development, and the construction of storage facilities, the available funds are entirely inadequate. If we compare funding levels between 2023 and 2024, there was a slight increase, but for 2025, we are facing a reduction," Vasylchuk said in an exclusive interview with Interfax-Ukraine when asked whether Ukraine's archives sector receives sufficient financial support.
When asked about international funding for archival projects, the deputy minister noted that the State Archival Service of Ukraine and its leadership actively collaborate with donors, benefactors, and sponsors.
"Among other things, they receive technical equipment for digitization projects, which significantly helps maintain the pace of digitization that the State Archive of Ukraine is justifiably proud of," she added.
