China denies reports of talks on participation in peacekeeping mission in Ukraine
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China Guo Jiakun said at a press conference on Monday, March 24, that reports of discussions on China's participation in peacekeeping forces in Ukraine are false, the Chinese publication Global Times reports.
"In response to a journalist's question referencing a German Welt am Sonntag report claiming that the Chinese Foreign Ministry had discussed in Brussels the possibility of China joining Ukraine's peacekeeping forces, and seeking confirmation on whether China is considering deploying troops to Ukraine as part of such a mission and under what conditions, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that the report is entirely untrue," the publication reports.
Guo Jiakun confirmed that China's position on the war in Ukraine, or the "Ukrainian crisis" as Beijing's official circles call it, remains "consistent and unambiguous."
The day before, Welt am Sonntag, citing EU diplomatic circles, wrote that Chinese diplomats in Brussels had held consultations with Europe on the advisability of their potential participation in a peacekeeping mission for Ukraine. European politicians responded that including China in a possible peacekeeping mission could affect Moscow's position on accepting peacekeepers.
In 2023, China proposed its own "peace plan," which was supported by Brazil.
