Kyiv student detained for threatening to blow up currency exchange office

A student from a metropolitan college demanded money from a currency exchange teller and threatened to blow up the exchange. He claimed it was a prank, not an attempted robbery, after being detained.

"Under the procedural guidance of the Sviatoshynsky District Prosecutor's Office, a 19-year-old resident of Kyiv was reported on suspicion of committing a robbery at a currency exchange (Part 4, Article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)," the Kyiv City Prosecutor's Office reported on its Telegram channel on Thursday.

According to the prosecutor's office, it was established that a student from a metropolitan college with his face covered entered the currency exchange premises and handed the cashier a note.

"The note said that he had explosives with him and that he would detonate them if he did not receive all the money from the cash register. At the same time, the suspect yelled at the women, saying that they had only a few minutes left because the room room was about to be blown up. He also threatened to climb into the cashiers' area," the report states.

The prosecutor's office notes that the currency exchange workers immediately called the security service to the scene, who detained the attacker.

"He did not have any explosive devices with him. After his detention, the suspect explained that it was a prank, not a robbery," the report says.

The sanction of the article for robbery committed under martial law provides for imprisonment for a term of 8 to 15 years with confiscation of property.
