Former Ukrainian politician Andriy Portnov was shot dead near an American school in Pozuelo de Alarcón, an upscale suburb of Madrid, and police are currently searching for the killer, Los Replicantes reports.

"It is still unknown how long Portnov had lived in Spain, but his children attended the American school in Pozuelo de Alarcón. In fact, he lived in a house very close to this exclusive school," the report says.

The National Police are reportedly currently investigating the details of the crime, although it could be related to "settlement of scores or political issues." Forensic experts and the "V" homicide unit have arrived at the scene and are investigating.

"The murder is the work of professional hitmen. The search for the shooter, a man dressed in a blue tracksuit and a fanny pack, who fled through Casa de Campo, is ongoing, and police are currently combing this part of the capital," the publication writes.

The newspaper El Mundo also reports on the contract nature of Portnov's murder.

"The shots were fired from behind. One of them hit him in the neck, and after he fell face down, he was shot in the head... The police are looking for a tall, thin man who, after shooting the man, fled in the direction of Casa de Campo. A large-scale search operation has been launched in this area," the publication writes.

It is reported that there are currently two versions: a settling of scores related to organized crime or a political action.

Portnov was reportedly killed at 10:15 Kyiv time on Wednesday, May 21, when he was surprised by two or three assailants as he drove a dark Mercedes. The killers opened fire, first hitting him in the neck, then finishing him off with shots to the head, a total of up to five shots.

This is not the first murder in Pozuelo de Alarcón. In March 2018, José Ricardo Rojas Montes, a former member of the Los Miami gang, was shot 10 times near another private center after he was driving his son to a British Council school. In that case, he was linked to gang membership and drug trafficking.
