Constitution valid even during the war – Poroshenko

On Constitution Day, the fifth President of Ukraine, leader of the European Solidarity party, and Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, congratulated citizens and declared the threatening trend of authoritarian use of martial law to restrict constitutional rights.

"Martial law, of course, provides for certain restrictions, but not to the extent that is currently happening in Ukraine," the politician noted, the European Solidarity party said on its website.

Poroshenko criticized the introduction of censorship in the media, the weakening of the role of parliament, pressure on the opposition, civil society and volunteers. He also highlighted the use of the judicial system for political purposes, in particular searches without court orders and sanctions bypassing legal procedures.

The leader of European Solidarity called not only to defend the country, but also to preserve it as a parliamentary-presidential republic. He emphasized the importance of the values of the Maidan, which, in his opinion, are now under threat of their formal existence.

"We need not only to protect Ukraine, but also to win peace afterwards. So that Ukraine remains a parliamentary-presidential republic. So that the values that were stood for on the Maidan and then fought for on the front lines do not turn into ordinary words on paper," the ex-president is convinced.

"We are fighting for freedom, the right to choose, for our European course. For everything that is enshrined in the Basic Law," the politician concluded.
