Australia joins international register of damages from Russian aggression against Ukraine
Australia has completed the official procedures and joined the Register of Damage Caused by the Russian Federation's Aggression against Ukraine, the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine has reported.
As the press service of the department reported on Wednesday, the country will participate in the Register's activities as an associate member. From now on, its participants and associate members are 44 states and the European Union.
The Register of Damage is the first element of an international compensation mechanism, the need for which was determined by the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/ES-11/5 "Promoting the Implementation of Legal Protection and Ensuring Compensation for Damage in Connection with the Aggression against Ukraine" of November 14, 2022.
It was established on the basis of the Resolution of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe CM/Res(2023)3 on the Establishment of an Extended Partial Agreement on the Register of Damage Caused by the Russian Federation's Aggression against Ukraine. The establishment was announced at the 4th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe, held on 16–17 May 2023 in Reykjavik (Iceland).
From 2 April 2024, the Register will accept applications for compensation for damages, losses or harm caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine. Currently, applications can be submitted in 11 categories. The list is gradually expanding.
