Ukrainian World Congress initiates elimination of inconsistencies in introduction of multiple citizenship

2 min read

The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) is submitting bills to the Verkhovna Rada to eliminate inconsistencies in about two dozen laws in connection with the introduction of multiple citizenship in Ukraine, said Congress President Paul Grod.

"We still need to correct some laws that exist. We have calculated that there are about 20 laws that contradict the law on multiple citizenship. It was fundamental for us that there should be one class of Ukrainian citizen, not two. This means that every citizen of Ukraine, regardless of whether he has one citizenship or multiple, has the full rights and obligations of a Ukrainian citizen," Grod said at a briefing on Tuesday.

He noted that there are still many laws that do not allow, in particular, Ukrainians with dual citizenship to participate in public service.

As reported, on June 18, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on multiple citizenship, which simplifies the procedure for obtaining Ukrainian citizenship.

The law provides for the legalization of foreign citizenship, as well as the right to obtain foreign citizenship without renouncing Ukrainian citizenship. According to the law, citizens of other countries can become citizens of Ukraine by ethnic origin under a shortened procedure. The law also provides for a shortened procedure for obtaining citizenship in the event that a foreigner has completed military service in Ukraine. The law prohibits civil servants and judges from having multiple citizenship. According to the law, a person who has a passport of another state, but is a citizen of Ukraine, is recognized only as a Ukrainian citizen on the territory of Ukraine.

On July 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law on multiple citizenship.
