Head of Ukraine's State Water Agency: Danube River has potential to supply water to Southern Ukraine

The lower Danube basin has sufficient flow to provide water to a significant part of Ukraine, according to Ihor Hopchak, head of Ukraine's State Water Agency.

"All of Ukraine's runoff without the Danube is not substantial, but together with it, the volume of water is sufficient," he said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

According to Hopchak, the idea of diverting part of the river's flow to supply water to residents of southern Ukraine "has a right to exist," but it must be based on a scientifically sound project that undergoes both strategic and environmental assessment.

"If such a project is submitted to the State Water Agency, we will certainly review it," Hopchak added.
