The best way to pay tribute to the tens of millions of people who died in World War II is to avoid making the same mistakes today, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has said, calling on allies to unite in putting pressure on Russia.

"On this day in 1939, Hitler attacked Poland, and Stalin soon joined him, starting World War II, the bloodiest war in history. Today, it is very important to remember what came before this day: weakness and naive belief that territorial concessions would "appease" the aggressor," he wrote on X on Monday.

Sybiha noted that "the Nazi Third Reich bears full responsibility for the catastrophe of World War II, but there were also those who allowed this evil to become stronger - avoiding difficult decisions, preferring weakness to strength, passing off wishful thinking as reality, rather than realistic strategies."

"The best way to pay tribute to the tens of millions of people who died in World War II is to avoid making the same mistakes today. Unity of allies, pressure on the Russian aggressor, and support for Ukraine are crucial for security and long-term peace throughout Europe," he said.
