National Police and SBU arrest suspect in terrorist Attack in Korostyshiv
Law enforcement officers have detained a person involved in an explosion on the outskirts of the city of Korostyshiv, Zhytomyr region, which occurred on the evening of September 14 and resulted in the death of a person, the Zhytomyr region police communications department said on Tuesday.
"Within a few hours, law enforcement officers found a person involved in the terrorist act - a 31-year-old local resident. Previously, the man acted on behalf of Russian special services. Currently, the suspect is in custody," the report said.
Near the scene of the explosion, law enforcement officers found the remains of a homemade explosive device that was remotely activated, as well as a power bank and a mobile phone for video surveillance.
At the same time, law enforcement officers searched the detainee's temporary residence in Zhytomyr and found a mobile phone with evidence of his cooperation with Russian special services and involvement in the terrorist act.
"It was established that the drug-addicted person involved in the Russian special services was offered cooperation in the messenger. The curator promised the man easy money and sent step-by-step instructions for completing the criminal task. So the perpetrator purchased the necessary components under the guise of household goods. Then he independently made an explosive device, equipped it with a mobile phone for remote detonation and disguised it as a fire extinguisher. The man put the constructed mechanism in a hiding place, covered it with garbage and sent the exact coordinates to the curator. As a result of the device activation, a 34-year-old resident of Berdychiv died," the report says.
The man's actions are qualified under Part 3 of Article 258 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (terrorist act that led to the death of a person). He was notified of suspicion and a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen. The procedural management of the proceedings is carried out by the Zhytomyr Regional Prosecutor's Office.
