Local authorities must check street names against Russian imperial symbols list – UINP head
Local authorities need to check the names of their streets with lists of people and events that contain and do not contain symbols of Russian imperial policy, says Oleksandr Alferov, head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance (UINR).
"Urban, rural, and settlement ATCs should look at these lists, check, in accordance with the law, what they may not have, and at local council sessions, of course, discuss renaming, or stop any renaming processes," Alferov said on the national telethon on Monday, commenting on the lists of people and events that contain and do not contain symbols of Russian imperial policy.
He also added that at the moment the lists include people and events from the period from the Moscow Tsardom to the Russian Empire, and in the future they will include more personalities from the period of the Soviet Union and the modern Russian Federation.
As reported, in early October, the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance, based on the expert conclusions of the Expert Commission, published lists of persons and events that contain and do not contain the symbolism of Russian imperial policy.
In particular, the list of persons and events of the period of the Moscow Tsardom and the Russian Empire, the objects dedicated to which contain the symbolism of Russian imperial policy, among others, included: Pyotr Bagration, Mikhail Bakunin, Nikolai Bauman, Ivan Bunin, Mikhail Vorontsov, Mikhail Glinka, Boris Godunov, Nikolai Karamzin, Mikhail Kutuzov, Mikhail Lermontov, Mikhail Lomonosov, Modest Mussorgsky, Pavel Nakhimov, Grigory Potemkin, Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Suvorov, Ivan Susanin, Ivan Turgenev and others.
