The United States may allocate between 20 and 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, the Financial Times reports, citing Stacie Pettyjohn, senior fellow and director of the Defense Program at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS).

She said it won't fundamentally change the dynamics of the war.

Former Pentagon official Mark Cancian, who now works at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank, estimates that the United States has a total of 4,150 Tomahawks, but since 2022, the Pentagon has purchased only 200, of which more than 120 have been launched. The Defense Department has requested funding for only 57 Tomahawks in its 2026 budget, the publication says, noting that Washington will likely also need Tomahawks during the military operation in Venezuela.

Military experts note that Tomahawks could complement Ukraine's own long-range attack drones and cruise missiles in large, complex salvos for greater effect, but would still be very limited in capability... certainly insufficient to support sustained, deep-seated attacks against Russia.

Two informed sources told the publication that US President Donald Trump is considering selling Ukraine an unspecified number of long-range Tomahawk missiles, but he needs to hear more about how Kyiv plans to use them.

A Ukrainian official told the publication that, in the Ukrainian side's view, Trump is closer than ever to delivering the missiles, but noted that the US president has made it clear that he has not yet made a decision.

Tomahawks are cruise missiles used primarily by the US Navy for land-attack missions. Launched from ships or submarines, they have a range of up to 2,500 km.
