European lawmakers warn Trump: Appeasing Russia risks global chaos
European parliamentarians are calling on US President Donald Trump to apply the strategy of the 40th US President (1981-89) Ronald Reagan in his relations with the Russian Federation - a policy of tough containment and victory.
"While we welcome your efforts to achieve peace, it is important to remember the words of President Ronald Reagan when he was asked about his strategy towards the Soviet Union: ‘We win, they lose.’ This should be our common strategy towards Russia, as well as the development of a peace plan that will ensure a just and lasting peace. The US, Ukraine and the free world must win; Russia and its allies from the ‘axis of evil’ must lose," the European parliamentarians’ appeal to Trump, which was transmitted to the Interfax-Ukraine agency by one of the signatories, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation Oleksandr Merezhko (Servant of the People faction), states.
The parliamentarians stressed that attempts to appease Russia as an aggressor or pressure Ukraine as a victim of this aggression are morally unacceptable and degrade human dignity.
"Ceding to Russia means abandoning common values and plunging the free world into anarchy and chaos," the appeal emphasizes.
Politicians expressed hope for strong American leadership and emphasized that "America is great and first only when it steadfastly defends freedom, democracy, respect for human rights and the rule of law."
The appeal was signed by more than 45 politicians, including members of the European Parliament, representatives of the legislative bodies of Lithuania, Croatia, Ireland, Estonia, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria.
