Russia not elected to Council of the International Maritime Organization – FM Sybiha

Russia was not elected to the International Maritime Organization Council, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha has said.

"This is another defeat for the Russian Federation in the elections to the governing bodies of international organizations - after failures in UNESCO and the OPCW (Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons) - which is an obvious continuation of its growing international isolation. Russia is a terrorist state that systematically violates international law, attacks civilian vessels, destroys port infrastructure and operates a shadow fleet, grossly violating safety standards. Therefore, it is logical that Moscow cannot be a member of the executive body of the International Maritime Organization," Sybiha said on X.

According to the minister, the vote demonstrates that the international community does not tolerate illegal behavior at sea and confirms that international law prevails.

"We are deeply grateful to all partners whose coordinated efforts made this result possible. Russia does not deserve a place in the governing bodies of international organizations. Ukraine will continue to work to ensure that the norms and principles of international law are fully respected and supported," Sybiha said.
