Rutte hopes PURL funding for Ukraine will reach $1 bln per month
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte hopes that European allies and Canada will continue to contribute to the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine under NATO's Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative and expects that this amount will be at least $1 billion per month next year.
"There have been a lot of pledges and I hope to be able to make some announcements later today. If you look at the overall numbers, we are now at $4 billion, so we are really on track to $1 billion per month - August, September, October, November, and I am cautiously optimistic that we will reach $5 billion for the whole year (2025), and then next year we need a lot of money again for the whole year, at least $1 billion, maybe even a little more than $1 billion per month, it could be around $15, maybe a little more for the whole year, when it comes to this crucial American equipment, that is, offensive and defensive, including interceptors for air defense systems defense, which are crucial for the security of Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure," Rutte said on Wednesday in Brussels before the start of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers.
The chief of staff stated that "it is good that this flow exists, that the Europeans are stepping up, and Canada is also doing a lot." "That is why I am really very happy that it is working," Rutte added.
As reported on Wednesday in Brussels on the eve of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, Canada's contribution to the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine within the framework of NATO's "Priority Ukraine Needs List" (PURL) initiative will be $200 million, and the total amount over the past six months will reach $890 million. According to her, Ottawa is allocating $35 million to support Ukrainian security within the framework of NATO's Comprehensive Assistance Package.
