Switzerland may send military contingent to Ukraine with UN Security Council or OSCE mandate – Ambassador
Switzerland may send its military personnel for a peacekeeping operation in Ukraine if there is a mandate from the UN Security Council or OSCE, Ambassador of Switzerland to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova Félix Baumann has said.
"In practice, this would mean that both Ukraine and Russia would have to accept such an operation. However, Switzerland cannot participate in any peace-enforcement mechanism that does not have a mandate of the United Nations Security Council or the OSCE. In any case, it would ultimately be the Swiss government and parliament who would decide on sending a military contingent for a peacekeeping mission," Baumann told Interfax-Ukraine.
Speaking about security guarantees for Ukraine, he referred to the Ukrainian authorities, who have repeatedly stated that this is actually a rather broad concept, which also includes support for reconstruction and recovery. "And I think that with Switzerland’s Ukraine Country Programme, we are actually supporting Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, as well as its economic resilience," the ambassador said.
