UK allocates GBP 20 mln to Ukraine for energy security amid first anniversary of 100-year partnership

Great Britain announced the allocation of an additional GBP 20 million to Ukraine to restore and protect the country’s critical energy infrastructure, a decision made amid the first anniversary of the 100-year partnership between the states and increased Russian attacks on the energy sector of Ukraine.

"UK and Ukraine mark first anniversary of the historic 100 Year Partnership with new initiatives driving security and prosperity in both countries. GBP 20 million of new support announced for vital energy infrastructure repairs in Ukraine as Russia’s barbaric attacks on innocent civilians intensify," according to a press release published on the UK government’s official website on Friday.

The assistance is aimed at meeting the urgent needs of Ukrainian families, children and the elderly left without heat and electricity due to sustained attacks on the energy sector. The funding will support repairs, restoration, protection and energy generation nationwide, ensuring electricity and heating for homes, hospitals and schools during harsh winter conditions.

"As we mark a year of our unique partnership, we do so in awe of the courage and resilience demonstrated by Ukrainians every day as they repel Russia’s barbaric invasion. The people of Ukraine should be in no doubt - we will stand with you today, tomorrow and for the next 100 years, both at home and on the international stage, because what happens in Ukraine matters to us all," Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

Celebrating the first anniversary of the UK-Ukraine 100 Year Partnership, the UK is also expanding the successful school twinning programme, "with 54,000 British and Ukrainian pupils set to benefit, fostering long term security and growth across both nations.  In a boost to the next generation, an additional 300 schools across both countries are set to participate in the landmark 100 Year Partnership schools twinning programme over the next 3 years."

"Our support for Ukraine as it continues to resist Putin’s barbaric war is steadfast, and our ongoing support for energy security and resilience will help to keep the lights on and Ukrainian homes warm when vulnerable civilians need it most," the Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, said.

As part of the 100-year partnership, both countries also implement projects such as InnovateUkraine, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s energy security and sustainable development.
