US invasion of Greenland would make Vladimir Putin the happiest man in the world – Spanish PM Sanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has said that a possible US military intervention in Greenland would cause serious damage to NATO and legitimize Russia's aggression against Ukraine, Reuters has reports.

"If we focus on Greenland, I must say that a US invasion of this territory would make Vladimir Putin the happiest man in the world. Why? Because it would legitimize his attempt to invade Ukraine," Sanchez said.

According to him, the use of force by the United States against the autonomous territory of Denmark would be a "death blow to NATO."

"Putin would be doubly happy," he added.

As reported, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of 10% tariffs against Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland from February 1, promising that the tariff would be increased to 25% from June 1, 2026. Trump noted that these countries directly object to the US attempt to seize Greenland and that the duties "will be assessed and payable until an agreement is reached on the full and absolute purchase of Greenland."

On Saturday, Bloomberg reported that members of the European Parliament were ready to suspend approval of a trade deal with the US: "European Union lawmakers are ready to suspend approval of an EU-US trade deal over President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on cranes that have supported Greenland in the face of US threats," the report said. Later, it became known that European Council President Antonio Costa would convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council due to the tense situation surrounding Greenland.

"Given the importance of recent events and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days," Costa said in a statement released in Brussels on Sunday. Date The meeting of the heads of state and government of the EU member states has not yet been determined.
