Zelensky calls for exclusion of Russia from UNESCO after shelling of Sviatohirska Lavra

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has stated the need for complete isolation of the Russian Federation and its exclusion from UNESCO in connection with terrorist activities and war crimes on the territory of Ukraine, in particular, the artillery shelling on Wednesday and Saturday of Sviatohirska Lavra in Donetsk region.

"Russian artillery has hit Sviatohirska Lavra in Donetsk region again today. The All-Holy Monastery was destroyed. It was consecrated back in 1912. It was first destroyed during the Soviet era. Subsequently rebuilt. And now the Russian army burned it. On Wednesday of the same week, Russian shells exploded right in the cells of the monks of the Lavra. Four people were killed, another four were seriously injured," Zelensky wrote on Telegram on Saturday.

According to him, the occupiers know that about 300 laypeople, including 60 children, are hiding from the fighting on the territory of Sviatohirska Lavra, and there are no military targets there, but "they don't care what exactly to turn into ruins."

The Head of the Ukrainian state recalled that on May 31, the Verkhovna Rada appealed to UNESCO with a demand to deprive the Russian Federation of membership in the organization and now Ukrainian diplomacy is working on this.

"Every church burned by Russia in Ukraine, every school blown up, every destroyed memorial proves that Russia has no place in UNESCO. What can we talk about with a barbarian state, with a terrorist state? ... We expect a logical and fair response from the UN and UNESCO. This is the UN and its charter does not provide for unity with terrorists. The isolation of Russia must be complete, it must be responsible for its crimes," Zelensky summed up.
