Zelenskyy to speak at UK govt meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will speak at an extraordinary meeting of the UK Cabinet on Friday, the British government website reports.
"The Ukrainian leader, who will be the first official visitor to Downing Street during Prime Minister Keir Starmer's tenure, is expected to meet and brief the new Cabinet about the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine, and the need to ramp up Europe's defence industrial base to outpace the Russian threat," the website reports.
It is noted that the last foreign leader who personally addressed the Cabinet was President (U.S. Bill) Clinton in 1997.
The two leaders are also expected to agree a Defence Export Support Treaty, which will be signed by defence ministers, to jump-start the UK and Ukraine's defence industrial bases and increase production of military equipment and weapons.
"The treaty will enable Ukraine to draw on GBP 3.5 billion of export finance, to support its armed forces. It will also allow Ukrainian and UK defence companies to invest in further military capabilities and continue to rapidly innovate on new and novel military hardware," the website reports.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "Ukraine is, and always will be, at the heart of this government's agenda and so it is only fitting that President Zelenskyy will make a historic address to my Cabinet."
It is also reported that the leaders will discuss the conclusion of negotiations between the UK and Ukraine on the provision of GBP 181 million in support to Energoatom for the supply of nuclear fuel from Urenco.
