Tax hike law harms economy, doesn't help army – Poroshenko

Ukrainian MP and leader of the European Solidarity party, Petro Poroshenko, believes that the recently adopted law increasing the military tax will lower workers' living standards and hurt the Ukrainian economy while failing to assist the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was stated on the political party's website.

"National security and defense are primarily ensured by the Armed Forces. But without funding generated by the Ukrainian economy and businesses, we cannot sustain the army... 55% of Ukrainian businesses have said they cannot compensate for the rise in the military tax, and this will inevitably lead to impoverishment of employees – not only nurses, cleaners, and the poorest, from whose pockets you plan to take money, but all workers," Poroshenko said during his speech at the Verkhovna Rada on Thursday.

He added that the law "creates a wasteland instead of fostering a business-friendly climate." Poroshenko also pointed out that retroactively collecting taxes from October 1 violates Ukraine's Constitution, urging for the military tax hike to be stopped.

"I emphasize – there are other resources we can use to finance the army," he said.
