Poroshenko: We need to learn from Cold War when West Germany gained NATO membership despite protests in USSR
Member of Parliament of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, said during the Political Assembly of the European People's Party (EPP) that Russia has attracted troops from North Korea and weapons from Iran to the war against Ukraine, and this means that the Third World War has already begun. This was reported on the website of the European Solidarity political party with reference to an interview with the Times of Malta.
"We have North Korean soldiers on Ukrainian territory. We have drones from Iran attacking right in front of my house. We have North Korean missiles attacking energy infrastructure in Kyiv [and] artillery shells delivered to Russia from North Korea and Iran," the leader of European Solidarity said.
Poroshenko warned that North Korean soldiers are being sent to Ukraine to gain combat experience, and these troops will be used in Southeast Asia to blackmail the world. He stressed that together with Iran, North Korea supplies more artillery shells, missiles and drones than all NATO member countries supply to Ukraine together.
Poroshenko stressed that this is the main danger facing Ukraine and called for action.
"We need an effective mechanism to make sanctions effective and stop Iran and North Korea from supplying these weapons. With that, victory would be significantly closer, and Russia would be significantly weaker," Poroshenko stressed.
During his stay in Malta, Poroshenko addressed the Political Assembly of the European People's Party at the headquarters of the Nationalist Party, which is part of the EPP. He spoke few hours after Russia had launched a missile at Ukraine that is believed to be capable of carrying a nuclear charge. According to Poroshenko, the Russian president "wants to make our partners in the West afraid," which Putin really needs to achieve his goals.
Answering the question of whether victory over Russia is realistic and whether his country could agree to the cession of territory, Poroshenko stressed that there would be no compromise on this issue, Ukraine would never recognize or agree to the seizure of Ukrainian territory.
Listing five conditions for peace, the former president said there would be no compromise on Ukrainian sovereignty and independence, emphasising Ukraine will never be a colony of Russia and that it instead wanted to join both the EU and NATO.
Poroshenko also noted, commenting on the statements of U.S. President-elect Trump, that victory within 24 hours is possible if Ukraine is invited to NATO. According to him, it is necessary to learn from the example of the Cold War, when West Germany gained membership in NATO despite the protests of the Soviet Union, which occupied the east of the country. Poroshenko said that "we must learn from this experience and repeat it."
“The only thing Trump needs to do is invite Ukraine to join NATO. It’s a very important precondition to stop the war,” Poroshenko stressed.
