Ukraine and Mexico sign memorandum on scientific cooperation in Antarctica – NASC

The National Antarctic Science Center (NASC) and the Mexican Agency for Antarctic Research on Monday, August 11, signed a memorandum in Mexico City on scientific cooperation in Antarctica, which provides for joint Ukrainian-Mexican research on board the icebreaker Noosphere and at the Akademik Vernadsky station, the NASC has said.
Head of the NASC Yevhen Dyky emphasized that it is strategically important to study the ecosystem of Antarctica in the context of climate change, as well as to involve more countries in this.
"Antarctica is a unique global laboratory where scientists from any country can, beyond national borders, together do global science and study processes that concern not only Antarctica, but also the entire planet... It is a great honor and pleasure for us to become a bridge to Antarctica for those countries that are just beginning their journey there, and we are waiting for our Mexican colleagues at the Vernadsky station and aboard the Noosphere," he noted.
Mexican agency President Patricia Valdespino emphasized that for Mexico, cooperation with Ukraine is a "happy opportunity."
For Ukraine, in addition to scientific interest, Antarctic diplomacy is of great importance, which is becoming an increasingly important tool of "soft power" and strengthens the position of our state in the countries of the Global South, in particular through the expansion of bilateral cooperation with the countries of Latin America.
