Hungary blocks EU statement assessing Ukraine's integration progress – media
Hungary has blocked the EU's annual statement on its enlargement process, in particular on Ukraine's progress, DW reported on Tuesday.
"The government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán did not support a positive assessment of Ukraine's efforts towards European integration, Denmark, which currently holds the EU presidency, announced at consultations in Brussels on Tuesday, December 16," DW reported.
The remaining EU member states confirmed that Ukraine has made progress in fulfilling Brussels' demands.
German Minister for European Affairs Gunther Krichbaum called Hungary's actions "increasingly destructive" and accused the Budapest government of obstructing EU decisions.
"Hungary's veto means that Ukraine still cannot begin formal negotiations on EU accession. However, informal consultations on the terms of Ukraine's membership are already underway," noted Danish Minister for European Affairs Marie Bjerre.
