Most peace operations in 2023 were led by regional organizations, alliances – SIPRI

In 2023, 63 multilateral peace operations were active around the world, 38 operations were conducted by different regional organizations and alliances, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).

"There were 63 active peace operations in 2023 – one fewer than in the previous year. Three started in 2023: the European Union (EU) missions in Armenia and Moldova, and the Southern African Development Community Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most of the peace operations – 38 out of 63 – were conducted by regional organizations and alliances," Director of Military Programmes of Razumkov Centre Mykola Sunhurovskyi said during the presentation of SIPRI Yearbook 2023: Armaments, Disarmament and International Security at the press center of the Interfax-Ukraine News Agency on Wednesday.

According to him, ad hoc coalitions of states conducted five multilateral peace operations in 2023, which was one fewer than in 2022.

In 2023, three trends related to multilateral peace operations continued. First, broader geopolitical tensions continued to affect the political consensus on managing armed conflicts. Second, there was growing dissatisfaction at the national level with existing peace operations, prompting discussions in host countries about their effectiveness and value. Third, the past few years have seen a shift away from UN-led operations and an increase in the number of operations deployed by regional organizations.

SIPRI Yearbook 2023: Armaments, Disarmament and International Security was prepared by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). It was established in 1969 with the aim of familiarizing specialists and the public with events, phenomena and trends in international security, primarily in its politico-military and economic-military aspects.

Since 2000, SIPRI Yearbook (in Ukrainian) has been spread by the Razumkov Center among government and parliamentary structures, central authorities, leading universities, public libraries in the amount of about 1,000 copies annually. The Yearbook is issued with the financial support of the Swiss Government.
