Nykyforov denies info about seven countries opposing Ukraine's invitation to NATO
Information disseminated in the media that seven countries oppose inviting Ukraine to NATO is not true, the idea of an invitation is supported by the absolute majority of the Alliance member countries, said presidential press secretary Serhiy Nykyforov.
"Information in the media that seven countries oppose inviting Ukraine to NATO is not true. These rumors are beneficial to those who want to create a false impression that Ukraine's accession does not have broad support among the Alliance members. In fact, the idea of inviting Ukraine is supported by the absolute majority of the member countries, and otherwise active advocacy work is underway," Nykyforov said.
Earlier, Politico, citing unnamed U.S. and NATO officials, reported that Germany and the U.S. are allegedly among the main countries that are in no hurry to respond to the call of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to immediately extend an invitation to Ukraine to join NATO. In addition, the publication reports that Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia and Spain are also allegedly against the invitation. It is indicated that the key countries of the Alliance are afraid of being drawn into a war with Russia.
